Perfect vision is much more than seeing 20/20. It involves eye teaming for optimal binocularity, visual reaction time for speedy response and accurate eye movements to locate and track objects and obstacles. Sports vision, AKA performance vision, is a sub-discipline of eye care that seeks to optimize the visual performance of athletes at all levels of play. Sports vision practitioners also seek to ensure that their athlete’s eyes are protected from physical injury and/or exposure to the elements (UV, mud, etc.).
Visual Performance Peak performance requires that an athlete’s body works well, and in concert with each individual part operating efficiently and effectively. One essential component to peak athletic performance is vision. To ensure an athletes’ visual system is performing optimally with the rest of their bodies, and is not limiting their level of play, Dr. Fred Edmunds of XTREMESIGHT™, offers a unique visual performance evaluation. Athletes are invited to check their visual strengths and weaknesses with a visit to the XTREMESIGHT Performance Clinic where they will participate in a battery of standardized vision tests.
Results of visual evaluations conducted by XTREMESIGHT provide valuable information for the athlete, as well as their trainer and/or coach. An analysis, based on the results of the testing battery, allows XTREMESIGHT to develop recommendations, including contact lenses, eye protection and vision strengthening programs to help athletes improve weak, or enhance average visual skills. These tactics are aimed at improving the athlete’s performance on the field of play.
Data from the XTREMESIGHT Clinic’s evaluation may also be added to a larger database accessible to sports vision experts worldwide to compare the visual performance of athletes at all levels of competition.
Visual Performance Evaluation The following visual skills are evaluated in the XTREMESIGHT Performance Clinics:
Static Visual Acuity Evaluates how clearly the athlete sees objects in the distance while standing still.
Dynamic Visual Acuity Tests how clearly an athlete sees a moving object. Also tests how the athlete sees a static object while he or she is in motion.
Peripheral Awareness Measures awareness of objects in the outer boundaries of one’s field of vision.
Contrast Sensitivity Measures athlete’s visual sensitivity to a variety of environmental conditions creating subtle differences in background color and hue during competition, e.g. glare.
Eye-Hand Reaction & Response Speed Measures visual motor reaction between the athlete’s eyes and hands.
Eye-Hand Coordination Determines how well the eyes and hands work together. Unlike the eye-hand reaction and response speed skill above, which measures reflex response and reaction, this test measures cognitive response and coordination.
Eye-Foot Reaction & Response Speed Measures visual reaction time and motor reaction time between the athlete’s eyes and feet.
Ocular Preference Test Identifies an athlete’s dominant eye. Just as most people have a dominant hand, making them either right-handed or left-handed, they also have a dominant, or leading eye.
Fixation Disparity Measures presence of a deviation or disparity between the eyes when aiming at the same thing at the same time.
Accommodative-Vergence Facility Measures the athlete’s ability to change eye focus and aim when looking between objects at different distances.
Speed of Stereopsis Shows speed and accuracy of depth perception to the nearest one-tenth of a second. Stereopsis is the ability to measure distance, or see true depth.
